After You Apply: Next Steps

Congratulations on taking the first step! Follow this step-by-step guide to finalize your enrollment and prepare for classes.

Step 1

Access Your UAOnline Account

UAOnline is the University of Alaska's secure student portal. You will use it to monitor degree progress, register for classes, view transcripts, and manage accounts.

First-Time Setup with ELMO (Easy Login Maintenance Option):

  1. Visit the ELMO Tool.
  2. Select Option 3 to search for your Username and Student ID (requires birthdate, last name, and last 4 of SSN).
  3. Confirm five identifier questions to establish security parameters.
  4. Define account password and wait 15 minutes before logging into UAOnline.
Step 2

Math & Writing Placement

First-time students must place into math and writing courses before advisors can authorize course registrations. High scores can bypass introductory levels, saving tuition costs.

Math Placement (ALEKS)

UAS utilizes ALEKS for online math evaluation. Exams can be taken remotely at any time.

Writing Placement

Placement is determined by ACT/SAT combined scores. If you do not have ACT/SAT records, utilize our self-guided placement questionnaire.

Step 3

Meet With Your Academic Advisor

All degree-seeking students must meet with an advisor before signing up for classes. Your advisor helps structure class loads, map degree paths, and confirm program requirements.

Use the Find My Advisor Tool to contact your coordinator. If you are undeclared, contact the Student Resource Center at (907) 796-6000 for an appointment.

Step 4

Sign Up For Classes

Once cleared by your advisor, you can register online through UAOnline under the "Student Services" tab, or by submitting an official course add/drop registration document.

Step 5

Submit FAFSA & Financial Aid

File a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). List the UAS school code 001065 on your application. Alaska residents must complete FAFSA by June 30 to claim Alaska Performance Scholarships.

Remember: Starting Fall 2026, all undergraduate students receive in-state tuition automatically through Alaska Unlocked!

Step 6

Apply For On-Campus Housing

Freshman housing is located directly on our Juneau campus. Apartments for transfer, graduate, and over-21 students are a short walk away. Rooms are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

Step 7

Register For New Student Orientation

UAS requires all incoming students to attend orientation. Sessions are held for both on-campus and remote/online students, facilitating critical connections and academic readiness.

Step 8

Order Textbooks & Vouchers

Purchase textbooks through the official Ambassador Education Solutions Bookstore portal. To apply pending financial aid toward books, complete the UAS Book Advance Voucher form in advance.

Step 9

Whale Card ID Activation

Your Whale Card is your official student ID, library card, building keycard, meal plan payment method, and free admission pass for the Recreation Center. Setup your photo online.

Step 10

Pay Your Bill

Review and pay tuition and fees via UAOnline. Payment or official payment plan configurations must be processed by the first day of instruction to avoid enrollment cancellation.

Step 11

Complete Sex & Gender Discrimination Training

To promote a safe learning environment, UAS requires all students, faculty, and staff to complete the Title IX Sex and Gender Based Discrimination online module. Access this via the "Student Training" tab in UAOnline. Complete it after July 1st to count for the upcoming school year.
