Academic Policies
Official UAS academic policies governing grading, academic standing, course withdrawal, incomplete grades, and the grade appeal process for all UAS students.
Grading Scale
UAS uses a standard 4.0 GPA scale. A (4.0), A- (3.7), B+ (3.3), B (3.0), B- (2.7), C+ (2.3), C (2.0), C- (1.7), D+ (1.3), D (1.0), D- (0.7), F (0.0). Grades of W (Withdrawal), I (Incomplete), and P/NP (Pass/No Pass) do not affect GPA. AU (Audit) receives no credit or grade.
Academic Standing
Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 (undergraduate) or 3.0 (graduate) to remain in Good Academic Standing. Students below these thresholds are placed on Academic Probation. Two consecutive semesters on probation without improvement to Good Standing results in Academic Suspension.
Course Withdrawal Policy
Students may withdraw from individual courses through the end of the 10th week of a 16-week semester without academic penalty — the course appears as W on the transcript. Withdrawals after week 10 require Dean's approval and result in a W or WF (Withdraw Failing), which affects GPA. Full withdrawal from all courses is processed through the Registrar.
Incomplete Grades
An Incomplete (I) grade may be assigned when a student cannot complete coursework due to a documented emergency beyond their control. The student and instructor must complete an Incomplete Grade Contract. The work must be finished within one calendar year or the grade converts to an F.
Repeat Course Policy
Students may repeat any course once. The higher of the two grades is used in GPA calculation; both attempts remain on the transcript. Financial Aid eligibility may be affected for repeated courses. Consult the Financial Aid Office before repeating any passed course.
Grade Appeal Process
Students who believe a final grade was assigned in error or due to bias may file a Grade Appeal within 30 days of grade posting. Step 1: Contact the instructor directly. Step 2: If unresolved, submit a written appeal to the School Dean. Step 3: Appeal to the Faculty Senate Academic Standards Committee. Decisions at Step 3 are final.
