Financial Aid

Types of Financial Aid

Financial aid comes in many forms — grants you don't repay, loans you do, work-study jobs on campus, and scholarships based on merit or identity. Understanding all your options is the first step to minimizing your out-of-pocket cost.

Grants (Free Money — No Repayment)

AID

Federal Pell Grant

Up to $7,395/yr (2026–27) for undergraduates with exceptional financial need. Based entirely on EFC from FAFSA. No repayment required. Available for up to 6 full-time academic years.

AID

Alaska Performance Scholarship (APS)

Up to $4,755/yr for Alaska high school graduates with a 2.5+ GPA who took required coursework. Three tiers: Excellence ($4,755), Achievement ($3,566), and Merit ($2,378). FAFSA required.

AID

Federal SEOG Grant

Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant for students with exceptional need (Priority to Pell recipients). $100–$400/yr at UAS. First-come, first-served — file FAFSA early.

AID

Iraq & Afghanistan Service Grant

For students whose parent/guardian died in military service in Iraq or Afghanistan after 9/11. Equal to max Pell Grant amount if ineligible for Pell based on EFC.

Loans (Must Be Repaid)

AID

Direct Subsidized Loan

Government pays interest while you're in school. Up to $3,500/yr (freshmen), $4,500/yr (sophomores), $5,500/yr (juniors/seniors). Requires FAFSA and financial need. 6.53% interest rate (2026–27).

AID

Direct Unsubsidized Loan

Interest accrues from disbursement. Same annual limits as subsidized + additional $2,000/yr independent students. No financial need required. Best option after grants/scholarships are exhausted.

AID

Parent PLUS Loan

Parents of dependent undergrads can borrow up to the full COA minus other aid. 9.08% interest (2026–27). Credit check required. Strong recommendation: exhaust all student loan options first.

Work-Study

AID

Federal Work-Study (FWS)

Part-time jobs (usually 10–15 hrs/week) on or near campus for students with financial need. FWS wages are earned — not credited to your bill. Common positions: library aide, lab assistant, tutoring, administrative. Apply for FWS jobs through UAS Student Employment.
